To-Ban-Jan was introduced in Episode 6 of Season 1 of the Duel Masters anime.
Plot[]
A Chinese duelist with worldwide reputation, he approaches the table in a wave of fire and with a nunchucks-like wok around his neck. He duels Hakuoh in an exhibition match, and initially appears set to win the duel by destroying his blockers with Scarlet Skyterror, despite facing down "The White Terror", Hakuoh's favourite strategy. Unfortunately, with just one turn to go before summoning Scarlet Skyterror, Hakuoh casts Holy Awe, allowing him to attack and destroy all of To-Ban-Jan's creatures. To-Ban-Jan summoned Scarlet Skyterror on the following turn, but the loss of his creatures meant that Hakuoh would win the duel with Urth, Purifying Elemental before he could, and To-Ban-Jan conceded defeat.

- In the English dub, To-Ban-Jan says he comes from Shanghai and frequently uses cooking puns when speaking.
- He is named after Doubanjiang
, also known as douban or toban-djan, which is a hot and savoury Chinese bean paste made from fermented broad beans, chili peppers, soybeans, salt and flour.
