Standby
待機 (Taiki)
Dmwiki.net: Article

Standby is a gameplay term for when you put a game action on hold until another action is finished.

Details[]

When multiple processes would occur at the same time, or when another process occurs in the middle of a current process, they can't proceed simultaneously and are performed individually.

Therefore, processes other than the one currently in progress are in a standby state.

This is split into 2 scenarios:

  • 1) A standby effect from a Trigger Ability.
  • 2) Standby of cards used simultaneously.

Trigger Ability[]

A Trigger Ability will trigger, and then the effect is placed on standby to resolve.

7 Wisdompheus, Dragonic Elemental
Dmex2-44
Light Light / Creature
Angel Command + Apollonia Dragon
9500
Blocker Blocker
■ Double breaker
■ When you put this creature into the battle zone, look at the top 5 cards of your deck. From among them, you may take a spell, show that spell to your opponent and add it to your hand. Then put the rest on the bottom of your deck in any order.
■ When you put this creature into the battle zone, you may cast a spell from your hand that has "Spark" in its name for no cost.

In the above example, Wisdompheus, Dragonic Elemental has 2 different Come Into Play abilities. As it is put into the battle zone, one of them has to be chosen to be used first, with the other ability being put on standby until the first has resolved.

Abilities triggered at the same time can't be resolved at the same time, and are resolved one by one, so there is always a standby effect.

Conversely, if there are no other effects triggered at the same time, it will just resolve immediately, so you don't need to be particularly conscious of waiting.

Rules[]

From the Duel Masters - General Game Rules: Version 1.41 (April 12, 2024)

  • 110.5a Once triggered, the effect will be become a standby effect independent of its source. Then, even if the source of that effect moves to another zone with the ability of another card, that effect will not disappear. Note, some effects cause the source of the effect to perform another action "instead" of doing the original effect.

Example: If you choose to make the total power of one of your opponent's creatures less than or the same as the power of the source of the effect, the source creature is already in the battle zone and can be referenced. If not, refer to the printed card's power.

From the Duel Masters - General Game Rules: Version 1.41 (April 12, 2024)

General Rules[]

  • If the same player triggers multiple abilities at the same time, the owner of the abilities can resolve them in any order.
    • If another ability is put on standby while another ability is on standby, it can be resolved regardless of the order in which it was added.
    • A suspended ability cannot be used to interrupt the resolution of the ability. The only cases that can be interrupted are those that create a replacement effect or abilities such as Shield Trigger that use another card as part of the result.
  • Each ability that occurs and is put on standby at the same time is resolved preferentially by the active player.
    • The non-turn player's abilities cannot be resolved until all of the turn player's abilities have finished resolving.
    • If a active player's ability triggers while the non-active player is still resolving their, all abilities of the non-active player are left on standby until the active player resolves their trigger.
  • Once triggered, the ability remains on standby even if the source of the ability is removed.
  • Whether the conditions of a trigger ability are fulfilled is determined at the time of the resolution of that ability. If they are not met at that stage, the effect won't occur.
  • A standby effect doesn't wait to resolve across steps.
    • All triggered abilities must resolve during that step before moving on to the next step.
    • An effect that skips the rest of the turn will prevent any other standby abilities from resolving.

Icon Ability and Modal Ability[]

The timing to choose modes or an icon ability is at the moment they trigger, not during resolution.

The choice of modes or icons is made when the ability is triggered, and will resolve accordingly.

"Whenever you" and "Whenever this"[]

There are abilities that can trigger multiple times and stack when an event occurs.

  • Example: These cards are worded as "whenever you cast a spell" or "whenever a player, ~~~~".

Other abilities can only be used and/or declared once with the initial trigger.

  • Example: These cards are worded as "whenever this creature attacks" or "when this creature would be destroyed".

Private Zone[]

Some abilities will be put on standby while they be a private zone.

However, they each must be first declared to be used when their trigger condition is initially met.

If you don't declare usage, it doesn't trigger, so it doesn't wait in standby to later resolve.

Abilities that don't standby[]

For abilities that have the wording "when you [do something]," you can stack and wait for the effects mentioned after the comma even if you don't meet the conditions after the time of declaration. However, you must strictly follow the requirements stated before the comma. For example, if a card like Redzone, Roaring Invasion has a declaration condition such as "Invasion: Fire Command (When your Fire Command attacks, [something happens])", you can't put its effect on standby, if a non-Command fire creature attacks, because it doesn't meet the specific condition of being a Command.

  • A spell's abilities are performed at time that the spell is cast, they aren't placed on standby. If there are multiple spell abilities on the card, perform them in the written order.
    • For example, if you cast Oracle Jewel of Control while your opponent has only an untapped Shin Gaiginga as one of their creatures, you must always use the "Destroy one of your opponent's untapped creatures." effect before the "Tap all your opponent's creatures in the battle zone.".
      • It is against the rules to perform these effects in the reverse order, and trying to avoid triggering the "When your opponent chooses this creature" ability of Shin Gaiginga.

Examples of standby Trigger Ability[]

  • Example of a standby interrupt.

While you have Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian in the battle zone and you put Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental into the battle zone, you can choose to resolve either the former card's draw effect or the latter cards "put a creature" effect first. The abilities of the cards in this standby state are as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
Put a creature into the battle zone. Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental

In this case, if you choose to activate the cost evasion effect of 'Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental first' and then put Miele, Vizier of Lightning into the battle zone, the triggered abilities from this action will be added to the group of standby abilities. You will be able to resolve any desired ability from the following options. There is no requirement to resolve the draw effect of the 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' that previously triggered.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
Tap opponent's creature. Miele, Vizier of Lightning
  • Example of removing the source

While you have 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' in the battle zone and you put Raija, Aqua Ninja into the battle zone, the abilities in standby state will be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
Bounce one of your creatures. Raija, Aqua Ninja

In this case, if you choose to resolve the bounce effect first and return either 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' or 'Raija, Aqua Ninja' from the battle zone to your hand, the standby draw ability will not be forfeited.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
  • Example of fulfilling conditions during standby

If you have Zundoko Sunny Stage, Flowery Way of D in the battle zone and 2 fire cards in your mana zone, and you put Macallan, Explosive Flame Shooter, but you don't match the conditions of the Mana Arms ability, they ability still tries to trigger, and the abilities in standby state will be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
+1 Mana increase Zundoko Sunny Stage, Flowery Way of D
Effect battle (condition not met) Macallan, Explosive Flame Shooter

If you resolved the mana increase effect first, and you put a fire card, you would then be able to use the effect of the 'Macallan, Explosive Flame Shooter' that you had put into the battle zone as the conditions of its trigger that was on standby is met.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
Effect battle Macallan, Explosive Flame Shooter
  • Example 1 of priority for the Active Player

During your turn, if you have a 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' and your opponent's has a 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' in the battle zone, if you put a 'Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental' into the battle zone, the abilities in standby state will be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
Put a creature into the battle zone. Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental (A)

(Note: (A) refers to the active player, and (a) refers to the non-active player. This also applies to the later "Example 2" and "Example 3".)

Due to the rule of "active player's priority in resolving abilities", at this point, the active player, which is yourself, resolves their standby abilities, which include drawing a card and putting a creature from your hand into the battle zone, with the resolved order being determined by you.

Until all of your standby abilities (with the source identified as "A" in the table above) are resolved, the opponent's standby abilities cannot be resolved.

Afterwards, let's assume that you proceed to resolve your abilities in the order starting from drawing 1 card.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian
Put a creature into the battle zone. Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental (A)

If you choose to resolve the cost evasion ability next, and you 'Miele, Vizier of Lightning' into the battle zone, the Come Into Play ability of 'Miele, Vizier of Lightning' and the ability of "Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian" will be into the standby, as an active player ability.

Although the initial abilities of the active player have all been resolved at this point, the newly added abilities from 'Miele, Vizier of Lightning' are still pending. Therefore, at this stage, the opponent still can't draw a card.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)
Tap opponent's creature. Miele, Vizier of Lightning (A)
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (A)
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)

Only after resolving all your active player standby abilities, including those added later, is your opponent able to to resolve their own standby abilities. Furthermore, your opponent has the option of resolving their standby abilities in their chosen .

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)
  • Example 2 of priority for the Active Player

In the opposite scenario, during the opponent's turn, where both you and your opponent have 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' in the battle zone, if you manage to put a 'Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental' into the battle zone, the standby abilities would be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)
1 Draw Opponent's Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (A)
Put a creature into the battle zone. Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental (a)

In this case, since the opponent is the active player, the opponent's ability to draw a card takes priority and would be resolved first.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (a)
Put a creature into the battle zone. Lulufens, Sun Dragon Elemental (a)
  • Example 3 of priority for the Active Player

During your turn, you have your 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' and your opponent has 'Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet' in the battle zone. If you cast Heaven's Force and put 2x Propeller Mutant into the battle zone, the standby abilities would be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (A)
1 Draw Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian (A)
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)

Since the turn player takes priority, you would first resolve your own draw abilities one by one.

After resolving both of them, the state would be as follows.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)

In this scenario, when your opponent resolves one of the abilities of 'Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet' and destroys one of the 'Propeller Mutant' the Put Into Graveyard ability of 'Propeller Mutant' would trigger, it results in the following state.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
Your opponent discards a card. Propeller Mutant (a)
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)

In this case, even though all your abilities have already been resolved and it was the opponent's turn to resolve their abilities, the pig ability of 'Propeller Mutant' which belongs to you, as the active player, its considered a new standby trigger ability.

In this situation, the resolution authority would return to you as the active player, and you would have the priority to resolve the ability to make your opponent discard a card. The opponent can't continue resolving the abilities, until you have resolved the discard.

Standby Ability: Ability Source:
Destroy Propeller Mutant Opponent's Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet (a)

Afterwards, the second Propeller Mutant is then destroyed by your opponent's 'Magnum, Fast Attack Puppet', and your opponent discards another card.

FAQ[]

  • Q: My opponent has a 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' in the battle zone, and I put 'Badmin Gai, Climb' into the battle zone. The ability of my opponent's 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' and the ability of my 'Badmin Gai, Climb' "when you put" ability will trigger at the same time. Which one resolves first?
    • A: If multiple abilities trigger at the same time, resolve the active player's abilities first. If it's your turn, resolve the effect of your 'Badmin Gai, Climb' first and then your opponent resolves the effect of their 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian'. If it's your opponent's turn, they resolve the effect of their 'Mist Rias, Sonic Guardian' first, before you resolve the effect of your 'Badmin Gai, Climb'. (See: General Game Rules: 603.3) source

Simultaneous Cards[]

Cards such as Cyber G Hogan and Kiriko Cubic, First Model Dragon Emperor are able to use multiple cards as part of their effect.

The selected cards first enter a pending state when their effects are resolved, and they are processed one card at a time. While processing any of the cards, the standby cards can't be referenced by other effects.
