Sealed Battle is a regulation format where a card deck is built from newly opened booster packs.
Details[]
It is similar to the Booster Draft format where a card is taken from a booster pack, and passed around the table until packs have been opened.
However, in this format a player opens 15 booster packs (aka 75 cards) on their own and builds a deck from the cards among them. It became one of the main CS events after the Gacharange Series.
The general procedure is as follows.
- You have 20 minutes to open each pack and register the opened cards on the deck sheet.
- After 10 minutes, the tournament has any other Judge announcements.
- You have 30 minutes to build a deck. The main deck should be exactly 30 cards, and the hyperspatial zone should be 8 cards or less. Hall of Fame regular or the 4-card limit don't apply. If you don't have 12 cards in your gacaharange zone, you can choose to use all of them or none.
Deck Building theory[]
Decks are generally focused on the civilizations of the highest rarity cards with high card power.
It can be harder to form aggressive strategies due to number of copies on key cards, so they are normally formed as Creature control deck types.
Light cards that tap creatures and darkness cards that can destroy high powered creatures are often highly suggested. However, Increase Power effects, Speed Attackers and Double Breakers from the Fire Civilization are often avoided. Power Based Removal is often wasted in the middle-to-late stages of the game.
As Cost Reduction and mana acceleration would be rare and inconsistent in low quantities, Shield Trigger is seen as a valuable method of playing cards for no cost.
Gameplay theory[]
If you attack into a Shield Trigger ability in the early turns, it can be disastrous, so try not to make shields breaks in the early turns. You should also be careful of overextending and using each card in your hand.
It is often advised to make even trades with your opponent, such as playing a blocker or removal card for each individual card thats played. However, high-power creatures are unlikely to be removed easily so they can be aggressively put out.
Trivia[]
- While it has シールド (Shirudo) in its name, it has no related to the Shield object.
