It is often for cards that can move cards from the opponents graveyard into another zone (especially the deck).

Some cards such as Kurozu, Blockade's Oath don't allow your opponents cards to leave the battle zone in any manner.

The cards used as graveyard use meta were mainly in the Water Civilization until the Dragon Saga.

Cards such as Cyber N World and Olive Oil, Karma's Burial can be used to return cards from both players graveyards into their deck.
Cards of this type are seen as an essential measure against deck types that strongly use the graveyard such as Graveyard source. Before these deck types, they are used to deal with Card Discard.
Cards in the graveyard are often seen as being "dead", with many cards such as Chanting Clineko, Purification Trap and Pokchinchin thematically used as "cleansing" the deceased creature.
The first card to affect your opponent's graveyard is Purgatory Release from DM-22 The Dragonic Nova.
