Evolution Source is a term used for the cards that are stacked underneath an Evolution Creature or Evolution Cross Gear when they are put into the battle zone.

Details[]

The conditions of evolving are defined by the text of the evolution card, with most referring to a race or civilization.

The evolution source can also be referred to as a place known as "Under Evolution Creature". However, it's not treated as an actual game zone.

When an evolution creature is put into the battle zone, an evolution source is always required. For Vortex evolution, 2 are required. For Galaxy Vortex evolution, 3 are required (except Super Terradragon Variant Vades). For an Evolution Cross Gear, a single cross gear is needed.

Rules[]

  • While under an evolution creature, any abilities or characteristics of the source are ignored. However, if 'card' is specified, characteristics such as a cost can be referenced. (Rulings after June 18, 2019)
  • If the evolution source is put into another zone, an ability that triggers as "When ~ leaves the battle zone..." doesn't trigger, as the creature is not treated as a "leave" or "destroy"ed. This is the same when moving along with the evolution creature's zone movement, or for abilities such as Meteorburn or Card Based Removal. This is because the evolution source of a card in the battle zone is treated as ignored.
  • When multiple cards are used as evolution source for abilities such as Vortex Evolution or Galaxy Vortex Evolution, their order can't be changed arbitrarily. (see March 16, 2021 Rules revision)
  • If only the top creature of the card is removed and the evolution source remains, they become separate creatures. If there are 2 or more evolution sources, the ignore the evolution/non-evolution conditions and exist as a single creature in a stack like Vortex Evolution (Their order can't be changed arbitrarily). As they are treated as being originally in the battle zone, Summoning Sickness doesn't occur and Come Into Play abilities don't trigger. However, the tap state is inherited. This is important to know for cards such as Soul Phoenix, Avatar of Unity and Royal Durian.
  • Evolution Creatures will be put into the battle zone tapped if the evolution source was tapped.
  • Due to the ruling change of January 17, 2014, "when you choose a card in the battle zone", the "evolution source" was also changed to be counted as a card. Therefore, you can choose to remove the bottom card underneath.
  • Due to the ruling change of February 21, 2014, if you evolve from a creature that had "summoning sickness", when the top card of an evolution creature leaves the battle zone during that turn, the creature will still have summoning sickness. Conversely, if you evolve from a creature that wasn't summoned that turn and the top card of the evolution creature was removed, the summoning sickness doesn't get summoning sickness.
    • According to the announcement on the official website, only the 2 cases were listed. But according to other official responses, evolution creatures with abilities such as Graveyard evolution and the top card is removed during the same turn, the evolution source has summoning sickness.
      • These ruling changes are seen as an adjustment that large finisher creatures could be summoned into the battle zone by turn 4 with graveyard evolution and card removal such as Senju Splash.
  • If you bounce an evolution creature with Persistent Prison of Gaia, the evolution creature returns to your hand, as well as any evolution source. If that same evolution creature that was on the top wasn't the card randomly discarded, then the shield burn ability isn't triggered.
  • Creatures with the Psychic, Dragheart or Gacharange supertypes are also able to evolve and stay in the battle zone while under an evolution creature. If they would leave the battle zone by removal or a Meteorburn ability, they are returned to to the hyperspatial zone or super gacharange zone.
  • When you evolve over a linked God, separate them into separate cards under the evolution creatures. If the top card is removed by a card such as Royal Durian, if they were originally God Linked, they can be left in the battle zone in a linked state.
  • When an Psychic Super Creature is evolved over, the are put under the creature as psychic cells. As a psychic cell isn't treated as a creature, they can be include by effects that refer to "underlying card", but not the "underlying creature".
  • When counting the number of cards included in a creature, it is the total sum of the top card and evolution sources underneath.
  • It is possible for non-creature (and non-tamaseed) card types to be in the battle zone as an evolution source (such as Cores or Spells), even though they can't exist in the battle zone by themselves.
  • There are rare cases where the evolution source isn't a card, such as Pack evolution and Ore evolution.

Rulings[]

  • Q: If I put a tapped 卍 De Szark 卍 (or evolution creature) into my mana zone with Fushigiverse, will the Magic Tools (or evolution sources) underneath be put into my mana zone tapped?
    • A: Yes, cards under the creature are put into the mana zone tapped. source
  • Q: With the ability of Jack Alcadeias, Dark Gaia can I choose a creature that costs 4 that's an evolution source under an evolution creature in the battle zone?
    • A: Yes. The card is put into the graveyard, but the evolution creature stays in the battle zone without an evolution source. Cards stacked underneath a creature are not treated as destroyed if they are put into the graveyard this way. source
  • Q: Can I choose the evolution source of a creature with Akkan Perocket?
    • A: No, the ability refers to a "non-creature" card, so since it refers to the characteristic of a "creature", you can't choose the evolution source. source
  • Q: I have the Water and Fire civilizations in my mana zone, and an evolution creature that was evolved over Carol, Gokigen Shout was destroyed by Terror Pit. Can the "When this creature would be put into your graveyard from anywhere" ability be used?
    • A: No, Carol's replacement effect can't resolved and is put into your graveyard. The characteristics of cards are ignored when they are under an evolution creature, and if a characteristic is ignored before changing zones, the replacement effect for that zone change can't be applied. source
  • Q: Team Tech's Wave Go! was cast by my opponent with the "Return all your opponent's cards that cost 5 or less in the battle zone to their owner's hand." ability chosen. If there is a Deal, Mechanic / 「Today's Lucky Number!」 under one of my opponent's creatures that costs 6 or more, can I refer to the cost of the spell and return it to my hand?
    • A: Yes, they can be returned to your hand. Twinpact cards that have a cost of 6 or less on their spell half can be returned to the hand by the "Return all your opponent's cards that cost 5 or less in the battle zone to their owner's hand." ability. source

  • 200.3a Cards that are underneath a card due to evolution, etc have their characteristics ignored during gameplay. However, when 'cards' are specified, the characteristics are referenced. When specifying other things than 'cards' (such as 'creature'), these characteristics aren't referenced.

Example: A water creature that is evolved over a light and water creature is only treated as a water creature, and its power and race are unaffected by the underneath cards. However, a card such as 'Team Tech's Wave Go!' can affect the cards underneath them if they match the conditions.

Example: 'Bangetsu 卍 Ga・Ryuzark 卍' refers to Magic Tools as a race, so cards underneath '卍 De Szark 卍' can't be referenced.
