Cost Increase is a term for the effect of increasing the cost of summoning creatures or casting spells.

Increasing the cost of your opponents cards is a Tempo Advantage, but increasing your own cards is a demerit.

5 Milieus, the Daystretcher
Light / Creature

Blocker Blocker (Whenever an opponent's creature attacks, you may tap this creature to stop the attack. Then the 2 creatures battle.)

■ Each darkness creature costs 2 more to summon, and each darkness spell costs 2 more to cast.

3 Fuuma Gorgonshack
Water / Creature
Grand Devil

■ All spells cost 2 more to cast.

3 Taslic, Strange Stone
Light / Creature

■ Your opponent's spells cost 2 more to cast.

Cards with an increased Mana Cost won't be able to be used without the higher number of cards in your mana zone, negatively affecting the Mana Curve of a deck.

Typically, because it is a strong ability many of the cards affect both the opponent and yourself. The abilities also tend to be limited in scope of the cards they affect, such as a specific civilization or spells. For this reason, they are usually treated as meta-cards.

  • It is similar to Mana Burn, but as additional cards can be put into the mana zone, it is easier to overcome.
  • Alephtina, Spiritual Princess is a card with a demerit that increases its own summoning cost based on the number of your shields.
  • There is an opposing term of Cost Reduction that reduces the cost of your cards.
