Break is a keyword action.

Details

It is the act of putting one of your opponent's shields into their hand when one of your creatures in the battle zone attacks your opponent and isn't blocked.

If there is no creature with the Blocker keyword to stop the attack, one of your opponent's shields is broken. That means you get to choose one of those shields and your opponent puts it into their hand (unless an effect such as Bolmeteus Steel Dragon says otherwise). It also enables the opponent to use cards with the Shield Trigger ability, so attacking recklessly may cause ambush and reversal.

Break is referenced on Breaker abilities signifying how many shields a creature with the ability will break when they attack your opponent, as well as to trigger the conditions of Turbo Rush, Break Bonus or Kirifudash.

There are Additional Break cards that allow your creatures to break additional shields.

BUNBUN Viker ■ At the end of your creature's attack, if that creature breaks one or more shields during that attack, gacharange summon.
Death Arcadia, Devil Saint ■ Whenever one of your opponent's creatures breaks your shields, you may put that shield into your graveyard instead of your hand. If you do, destroy the creature that broke the shield.
Gaial Baby ■ Whenever this creature would break a shield, your opponent reveals that shield instead. You may put a non-evolution creature from your hand that costs less than any of the revealed cards from that shield into the battle zone. Then break that shield.
Ganpachi, Stubborn Fishery ■ After this creature attacks, if this creature broke a shield, draw 2 cards.
Mettza's Iron ■ When this creature breaks a shield, at the end of the turn, destroy this creature. Each player then chooses a card in their mana zone and puts it into their graveyard.
Momoking, Jonetsudash ■ Whenever this creature breaks a shield, you may reduce the cost of your next "Kirifudash" ability by up to 2 until the end of the turn. However, it can't cost less than 1.
Onsen Sabaki, Fire Water Sword ■ Whenever the creature crossed with this cross gear breaks your opponent's shields, destroy one of your opponent's creatures that has power 3000 or less. Then you may draw a card.
Pack E, the Super Electromagnetic ■ Whenever this creature breaks a shield or leaves the battle zone, open the pack under this creature and add a card from it to your hand. Then add the rest to your collection.
Padma Romasa, Spirit Knight ■ At the end of each turn, if your opponent broke 2 or more of your shields during that turn, add the top card of your deck to your shields face down.

Hazure Ponnosuke ■ This creature can't break shields.
Impact Absorber ■ While this card isn't crossed with a creature, creatures can only break 1 shield per attack.
Night's Ponnosuke ■ This creature can't break shields.
Ral Absorber, Light Divine Dragon ■ Your opponent's creatures can't break more than 1 shield per attack.
Zeron Infinity ■ This creature can't break any shields.

Break Substitution

Card: Card Effect:
Bluum Erkis, Flare Guardian ■ Whenever this creature would break one of your opponent's shields, your opponent shows that shield to you instead of putting it into his hand. If it's a spell that has "shield trigger," you cast it for no cost, then put it into your opponent's graveyard. If it's not, your opponent puts it into his hand.
Fuuma Danrimos ■ Whenever one of your Grand Devils would break a shield, you may choose a card name instead. Then choose and look at one of your opponent's shields. If it has the same name you chose, put it into it's owner's graveyard. Put any other card into its owner's hand.
Q.Q.QX. / Final Burial Five Sense Down ■ Whenever this creature would break a shield, your opponent puts that shield as the 4th card from the top of their deck horizontal instead.
Ziggy Thunder Bolt / Round One ■ Whenever this creature would break a shield, choose a number instead. Your opponent puts that shield face-up and puts all cards that have the same cost as that chosen number into their graveyard. Then your opponent puts the rest into their hand.

  • 701.14. Break
    • 701.14a To break a shield is to put it into its owner's hand. Break can be caused by attacking with a creature or by other effects.
    • 701.14b Putting a shield into its owner's hand isn't always caused by breaking a shields.

      Example: When a creature with an ability to put a shield into your opponent's hand, it doesn't break a second shield if given 'Double Breaker'.

    • 701.14c When multiple shields are broken by a card effect, they are moved into their owners' hands at the same time. This is different from breaking shields due to a 'Breaker' ability.
    • 701.14d An effect that increases the amount of shield a creature will 'break' affects both a an attack caused by an attack, and a creature effect.

  • 701.14. ブレイクする
